Introducing The Problem SWOTer

This proven toolkit will help you show that you are the best strategic thinker to solve the challenges a company needs to overcome in order to succeed (win market share, win over the press, win shelf space, win capital).

Look, it’s time to lead a rich and timely business conversation with your interviewers that starts and ends with some of the challenges that are actually on their minds and within their scorecards.

You’ve been rehearsing your interview answers. Your resume is updated.  You’ve impressed HR. You know how to explain your career history. You have valuable skills that you know could help a future employer.

You’ve heard that interviews have changed and interviewers are now requiring more of job candidates, so you’re working on bringing fresh ideas to your next interview!

There’s just one problem…

You’re not a mind reader but you wish you knew the interviewer’s agenda – you wish you knew what was in the back of his mind during an interview. You wish you knew about his priority business challenges.

You know that you could uncover clues around this agenda that could help you resonate with the interviewer but you want a framework to help you prioritize your findings.

You are unsure of how to tie it all together – how you could express the idea that if you were hired you could help the interviewer fulfill what is on his agenda.

You wish you could do all of this and still achieve what is on the top of your mind – you know you need to sell yourself to land the job.

In comes the Problem SWOTer….first a little background.

A SWOT is a strategic framework that traditionally helps companies evaluate their internal and external situations. SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. When companies use this framework they look for strengths and weaknesses within their business as well as external opportunities and threats that are beyond their firm. The top companies in the world use a SWOT Analysis to come up with ways to amplify their Strengths, mitigate their Weaknesses, capitalize on Opportunities, or curtail a Threat.

I have refocused this useful framework, pivoting from solely considering a company and taking into account a high-performing job candidate’s prospective contributions in light of the company’s internal and external situations.

The Problem SWOTer is a toolkit that will help you use a SWOT Analysis, considered one of the best company analytical tools in history, to now prove that you are the problem-solver your desired company is looking for.

There are plenty of folks who say they are strategic thinkers during an interview, but this is how you can prove it and stand out during any job interview.

Who should use the Problem SWOTer?

  • Anyone who is pursuing a role as an internal or external consultant. This is a no-brainer: if you will serve as a strategic partner in any capacity, then it’s critical for you to go into an interview knowing the SWOT of your employer or your prospective clients.
  • Anyone who is vying for a job in a company going through a business transformation, or a company that needs one. These days, one of the top skills that a people leader can bring to the table is the ability to manage companies through change. The only way for an employer to know if you are the right person is to illustrate that you understand the company’s ins and outs, and a SWOT is a great way to show this.
  • Anyone who is looking to secure a role in a startup, especially if you plan to ask for equity. Startups these days are more concerned with your ability to solve their business challenges than you telling them about a time that you successfully handled a tough conversation (though interviewers traditionally ask behavioral questions such as “Tell me about a time when you handled a tough situation,” startups in these cases are unlikely to ask rudimentary queries and instead ask how you can solve their biggest problems). If you are going for a startup, then you need to have a strong handle on their challenges and how you are the best-positioned person for the job.

Why should you use the Problem SWOTer?

  • You will be able to show the relevancy of your experiences, relationships, and skills with what the company needs to do in order to win both short term and long term.
  • You will get a confidence boost from knowing that you thoroughly researched a company’s environment and figured out for yourself how you are the best-positioned person to help a firm thrive within that environment.
  • You will exhibit greater empathy for the strengths and weaknesses that your prospective peers and hiring managers are facing. As a result, you will be on the path toward building a rapport.
  • You will showcase your critical-thinking, strategic-thinking, and creative-thinking skills by not only understanding a company’s situation but by also imaging how your prospective contributions can impact said situation.
  • You will be better positioned to take on a more senior role if you are trying to make a career leap.
  • You will be able to secure your company’s investment if you want to work globally.
  • You will be able to enter a new sector if you do the added work to prove that you are indeed worth the risk of hiring someone who is NOT plug and play or local.
  • You will get a head start on peers who are also vying for a job at a top company in your sector if you learn how to use the very business-building tools that your employer will be using to grow. In a world where employees are stack-ranked, this is invaluable.
  • You will be better prepared to go into any conversation where you are asked for ideas on how you would transform a company based on your well-researched and thought-out understanding of what the company is facing and what it needs to win.
  • Your interviewers will perceive you as more valuable to them, which is especially helpful if you are trying to secure a substantive salary. This will also work if you are asking for more than usual, such as an equity stake, or if you are preparing to present to VCs who have conducted their own due diligence into your SWOT. In this case, your SWOT Analysis will explain the company’s situation, along with how you being part of the leadership team will help the firm thrive.
  • You will leave a favorable impression among decision-makers and influencers in your career.
  • You will step up your efforts in a way that has been productive for so many of my highest performing clients.
  • You will show up as the strongest possible candidate for the role.
  • You will not only be able to SAY precisely how you are the right person for the role, but also FEEL like the best person for the job.

    (verified owner):

This product helped me to focus my research a prospective employer. I used it to identify potential strengths in their product lines, how they are thinking about revenue growth in the short- and medium term; and I asked thoughtful questions that laid the foundation for very insightful discussions with my interviewers as they shared their vision and concerns about the company.
